Orbitz Recognized as “Top Producing Online Travel Agency” by South African Tourism

Ubuntu Awards Honor Outstanding North America Trade Partners in Business and Leisure Travel

CHICAGO, April 30, 2012 – Orbitz.com, one of the largest online travel sites in the world, was recently honored as the “Top Producing Online Travel Agency” by South African Tourism, the official tourism board for South Africa, at the third annual Ubuntu Awards recognizing top trade partners in North America for their outstanding support in promoting and developing tourism to South Africa.  The award stems from an extremely successful partnership between Orbitz and South African Airways designed to increase visitors to South Africa and enhance consumer knowledge of the country’s rich and diverse offerings.  The partnership also contributed to South African Airways being named the “Best Airline to South Africa” at the ceremony.

“Orbitz has been an extraordinary partner in communicating the unique experiences our country has to offer and in making South Africa distinct in the minds of consumers,” said Sthu Zungu, president of South African Tourism North America. “Because of their efforts in driving travel to South Africa, we were thrilled to recognize Orbitz as the ‘Top Producing Online Travel Agency’ at our Ubuntu Awards event in New York City.”

“Orbitz and South African Airways executed a breakthrough campaign to put South Africa on the map for Orbitz consumers and drive significantly increased travel to the country,” said Josh Winkler, vice president of partner marketing at Orbitz Worldwide.  “We surrounded Orbitz consumers living in key U.S. gateway cities with interactive South Africa messaging at all phases of the travel planning cycle, which resulted in a record year for travel to South Africa on the Orbitz.com site.  Following the success of this strategy in 2011, we are honored to accept the award for ‘Top Producing Online Travel Agency’ from South African Tourism.”

The Orbitz partnership with South African Airways continues with the added cooperation of South African Tourism in 2012 to maximize interaction with Orbitz consumers and promote South Africa’s distinct natural wonders.  As part of the ongoing campaign, Orbitz leverages its international geo-targeting capabilities to place South Africa’s message in front of the right consumer at the right time.  Co-branded assets including Orbitz homepage and main page units, international flight, hotel and vacation package search paths, and competitive destination travel guides link through to a South Africa landing page that features a South African Airways booking engine to drive sales.

“The innovative partner marketing initiatives launched by Josh and his team at Orbitz have realized significant benefits for South African Airways since their implementation last year,” said Todd Neuman, South African Airways executive vice president for North America.  “We look forward to continuing this partnership in 2012 with South African Tourism adding a new dimension to an already powerful collaboration.”
