Orbitz Insider Index Reveals Most Popular 2009 Labor Day Weekend Destinations

Index highlights where travelers will get the most for their money over summer's last big holiday weekend

CHICAGO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the season for a reason - it's Americans' last chance for a long weekend getaway before summer slips away. This edition of the Orbitz Insider Index reveals both where travelers are celebrating this holiday weekend and where they will find some of the biggest savings for a late-summer escape.

"Labor Day weekend may mark the end of the summer season, but it's just the beginning of great shoulder season travel deals," said Heather Leisman, senior director of merchandising for Orbitz Worldwide. "With discounts and promotions in top destinations around the country, consumers looking to take a late summer or early fall trip will find plenty of reasons to travel."

While Las Vegas and New York retain the top spots in the Index, a number of other positions have changed with Cancun and Honolulu moving up in the ranking. What's particularly notable is that the average cost of a hotel has decreased significantly year-over-year in many of the top destinations, with the biggest savings being seen in Seattle (-33%), Honolulu (-26%), Cancun (-24%) and New York (-22%).
