"Outside is In" With CheapTickets This Memorial Day

With Gas Prices Rising, Online Travel Company Offers Tips on Saving Money by Staying in Surrounding Areas of Top Destinations

Chicago, IL, May 17, 2006 – Many travelers making last minute plans for a Memorial Day getaway are being forced to factor rising gas prices into their decision. Fuel surcharges are increasing and prices at the pump are adding to the cost of both road and air travel.

CheapTickets.com, the leading online travel agency that knows "the less you pay, the better it feels," has identified the top five Memorial Day destinations – and has developed tips and special deals for making a visit to these destinations affordable.

"Outside is in," says Marita Hudson, of the CheapTickets Cheap Squad. "If you're heading to a big city – consider accommodations in a nearby suburb," she continued. "You'll often have easy access to all the city has to offer at a fraction of the price you'd pay to at the same 3-star hotel downtown. Best of all, you may discover attractions outside of the city limits that you wouldn't have experienced otherwise."

Cheap Tickets identified the top five U.S. Memorial Day destinations, based on advance bookings, and then developed staff picks for nearby locations that provide easy access while reducing stress on the budget:

Start off the summer on the right foot by saving a few bucks. CheapTickets recommends five alternatives just outside the heart of it all.

LAS VEGAS (STAY OFF THE STRIP) – The Las Vegas "strip" may be where the action is but a variety of hotels and casinos are located just minutes off the strip, offering excellent dining options, spas, golf courses and access to nearby attractions such as Red Rock Canyon. Public transportation allows ease of access to the strip, making it easy to stay in affordable hotels without missing out on the fun.

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – Miami's Caribbean and Latin flavor, from cuisine to the architecture, carries over into Ft. Lauderdale, located less than 30 miles outside downtown Miami, to make the city an eclectic vacation destination. Taxis and car rentals allow visitors to get into and around the city at their leisure.

OAKBROOK, IL – Just 30 minutes outside Chicago, Oakbrook, IL is the perfect alternative to staying in the Windy City. After a tour of the Mayslake Peabody Estate, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a round of golf, take the train into the city which boasts many appealing attractions.

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Located along the Hudson River, Jersey City is just a hop, skip and a jump outside Manhattan. Take a scenic ferry ride or New Jersey's PATH train into The Big Apple to experience culture and entertainment from all walks of life. Three airports are located nearby, and ground transportation is omnipresent with subways, buses and taxis at your disposal.

KISSIMMEE, FL – Close in proximity to the Orlando theme parks, Kissimmee is the perfect place to stay out of the hustle and bustle of the regular tourist town while still being close enough to the excitement and fun of Orlando. Nearby airports have shuttle service available to all hotels, and car rental is available. Beautiful beaches are only an hour away, and the tropical climate makes the area perfect for visiting at any time of the year.
