CHICAGO, July 23, 2013 - The Orbitz Late-Summer Travel Index has identified August travel deals hotter than the summer sun, with dozens of popular beach, mountain, urban and resort destinations showing hotel rates averaging less than $150 per night. Nearly a quarter of Americans surveyed by Orbitz prefer to vacation in August, 1 and there are plenty late-summer travel deals available for savvy travelers.
"While Memorial Day and July 4th are traditionally the highest traveled summer time periods, travelers can beat the crowds and high prices when traveling in August," said Jeanenne Tornatore, senior editor at Orbitz.com. Orbitz Editors' Late Summer Getaway Picks for Beach Bums, Urbanites and Outdoorsy Travelers
City: Savannah, GA tips a hat to old-fashioned "Southern Hospitality" and offers a variety of opportunities to take in its historical offerings. Travelers down south can explore Old Fort Jackson, the oldest standing brick fortification in the state, or sail the waterfront on a Riverboat Cruise. With serene beach locations to soak up the sun, Savannah is a steal with hotels around $140 per night.
Beach: Grand Bahama may seem like an expensive island getaway, but late summer is the perfect time for the budget-conscious to experience this Caribbean paradise. Jet-setters can cast away for as little as $130 per night, and experience serene beaches, natural green gardens and local island culture. Sit back with a rum drink and enjoy local music at Count Basie Square in Freeport, or explore an underwater cave in Lucayan National Park.
Mountain: Durango, CO offers a peek into the Wild, Wild West with hotel steals at just $150 per night. This quiet railway town of 17,000 offers a myriad of local and historical railroad museums and close proximity to Mesa Verde National Park. Travelers can experience all of it on a 45-mile stagecoach ride crossing narrow bridges spanning roaring white-water canyons along a 3,000-foot ascent on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Maximize Late Summer Savings
In addition to attractive late summer prices, travelers can find even more value in their trip by cashing in on perks offered to hotel guests. Wi-Fi can cost upwards of $20 per day and parking costs often skyrocket beyond $50, so picking hotels that include these amenities as freebies can really add up to big savings for travelers. Free breakfast ranked supreme as the top freebie in Orbitz Summer Survey.
Other quick tips for saving:
- Bundling means saving. Always search for vacation packages before booking air, hotel and car separately as savings can be more than 50 percent.
- While traveling abroad, be sure to take advantage of internet phone services which offer free international calls to avoid pricey in-room or mobile phone fees.
- Meal costs can add up quickly, particularly for families. Always look for free breakfasts and complimentary cocktail hours when booking your hotel accommodations.
- Look for "free resort credits," which provide guests with free money to spend at a resort on amenities and services.
